Tip of the week

Take lots of photos
Keep copies and document everything - from meetings to phone calls. With a digital camera, take photos of all aspects of the works as they progress. If you do find yourself in a dispute, this is your evidence - and it costs nothing to maintain. As with any ‘case’, you will have to present the facts backed up by evidence to an impartial judge, and the better and stronger your evidence the more likely you are to win.

About SelfBuild & Design

SelfBuild & Design magazine has been published monthly since 1997.

We aim to inspire and inform anyone contemplating a self build or any major building project.

Whether you are

  • a practical “hands-on” self-builder
  • a manager of your own self-build project, or
  • looking for a “turn-key” individually designed house from a package company

SelfBuild & Design is your essential companion – whichever your chosen route your dream home.

Every month case studies from real self builders are featured in the magazine to provide you with inspiration and guidance from those who have trodden the path before you. 100 of these Case Studies from recent years are available on this website. We cover the full range of “self build” projects – from new builds to renovations or conversion to major extensions – the challenges are often the same whatever the project! The case studies offer an insight into the widest possible array of self projects and construction methods – access to these is exclusive to our subscribers.

Available for everyone to browse are our FREE Beginners Guides: Getting Started. These cover the essentials to get you started on your own self-build project. A further selection of Beginners Guides: Next Steps are also available exclusively for SelfBuild & Design subscribers.

The monthly magazine also brings you the latest news from the world of self build, new product information and guides and much more – why not subscribe.
