Surge in women apprentices

There was a 138 per cent increase in the number of women taking up apprenticeships in construction between 2017 and 2021.

Despite the increase, women currently only account for just over four per cent of the on-site workforce. The findings are based on analysis of government figures by builders merchants Fastbuild, which looked into the first-hand realities of women working in construction.

Females only make up 14 per cent of all roles in construction.

Government data shows that 1,750 women enrolled in construction trade apprenticeships in 2017. By 2021, the figure had risen to 4,170.
