Keith and Heather Fairchild found their idyllic riverside plot just a kilometre from their existing home, but buying it proved far from stress free. Keith project managed the build, working closely with the main contractor. Extensive glazing at the rear of the new build offers views of the river, with bifold doors helping to merge outside and inside living.

Nick and Danette Morrish have converted an ancient cart shed and mid-20th-century milking parlour into a single-storey bolthole. The new building imitates the corrugated iron cladding of the former cowshed. “Dorset is a popular holiday destination, so our plan was to convert the farm buildings to cottages to generate a rental income,” says Danette. Hoods has far-reaching views across the Marshwood Vale, which includes local landmark Colmer’s Hill.

Kirsty Wilson overcame incredible obstacles to remodel and renovate her home in the heart of Epping Forest, creating a luxurious, quirky and pet-friendly retreat. Originally built in the 1800s, the house had been extended on both sides when Kirsty bought it. Now it has a new roof, timber sash windows and a rendered facade as well as a glazed dining extension. “My style is a big dose of eclectic,” explains Kirsty.

Standing in the foothills of the Highlands, Leigh and Alastair Craig’s distinctive new home was inspired by Scandinavian design and local buildings. Black House is a five-bedroom timber-framed home, designed by award-winning architect Colin Smith in order to create a close relationship with the surrounding landscape. “It’s a really lovely setting here, because we’re in a rural location on a former working farm,” Leigh explains.
