Pastures New

Maureen and Clive Keevil left their converted barn to build a smaller timber-frame Potton home on their farm in Somerset, using larch cladding and a slate roof to create a barn-like look perfect for its setting. “We really liked the fact that Potton would handle the design side of things and also make the planning and Building Regs applications on our behalf,” says Clive.

On the Waterfront

First-time selfbuilders Ants and Su Collins have built a unique octagonal home on a primal waterfront position. Using insulated concrete formwork, the new build sits on the site of a disused boatyard, which Ants intends to rebuild as part two of the project. “It was very much a spur of the moment decision, which we’ve never regretted.” admits Ants.

Opening up for Family Living

Nikki and Stephen Foster have completed the stylish transformation of a former RAF officer’s residence in a historic North Yorkshire village setting. The house was renovated and given a two-storey L-shaped extension, creating a bold exterior while remaining sensitive to the original 1930s brick building.

Sarah Stanley, founder and director of Unique Home Stays, has added an extension to a wheeled wagon to create a unique retreat with quirky Western-inspired interiors. The original shepherd’s hut was extended in timber to one side, with a glazed entrance veranda creating a sheltered indoor/outdoor space. “Try to be original and only use high-quality materials,” advises Sarah.

Low on Energy

The home that Linda and Chris Hudson have built  for their retirement is highly energy efficient, featuring underfloor heating, whole house ventilation with heat recovery, an air source heat pump, 16 solar panels and triple-glazed tilt n’ turn windows.
